Almond milk offers a secret weapon to those that are lactose intolerant. This delicious, plant-based beverage is brimming with health benefits, making it a fantastic choice for those seeking to nourish their bodies while enjoying guilt-free indulgence. Naturally low in calories and free from cholesterol and dairy dree (I’m lactose intolerant), almond milk supports heart health and aids in digestion—key priorities as the body changes with age. It’s an excellent source of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that promotes radiant skin and protects cells from oxidative stress.
Most almond milk is also fortified with calcium and vitamin D, nutrients essential for bone health and preventing osteoporosis, a common concern, especially for women in their 50s and beyond. Additionally, its creamy texture and mild, nutty flavor make almond milk a versatile alternative to dairy for those managing lactose intolerance or dietary preferences. No need to look any further for dairy free milk alternatives, almond milk and lactose intolerance are a perfect match!
Here are some simple ways to incorporate almond milk into meals:
Smoothie Base: Use almond milk as a base for fruit and vegetable smoothies, adding a creamy texture while keeping the calorie count low.
Overnight Oats: Soak oats in almond milk with a dash of cinnamon and fresh fruit for an easy, nutrient-packed breakfast.
Creamy Soups/Curries: Replace heavy cream with almond milk in soups like butternut squash or tomato for a lighter yet satisfying dish.
Lattes & Teas: Froth almond milk for your morning latte or enjoy it in herbal teas for a comforting, dairy-free beverage.
Author Perspective
I don’t drink milk because I’m lactose intolerant. Almond milk is usually less expensive than milk and can be frozen, but it can separate when thawed which is OK for smoothies, but my husband doesn’t like the consistency after being frozen/thawed. It seems to last longer than milk in the fridge and I’ve gotten used to it as a milk alternative in my baking as well. As a diabetic, I don’t bake sweets anymore unless they have Stevia chocolate chips, Monkfruit sugar and other substitutions which will reviewed in this website’s Eating Well posts.
I buy the unsweetened (fewer calories, less sugar grams) vanilla flavored almond milk. I use this in my morning coffee, in gravies, curries, smoothies (I use Whey Protein made w stevia) and soups. I’d bet this would be good with low sugar hot chocolate in the cold winter months!
